In the face of growing populations, resource constraints, and overburdened infrastructure systems, cities have to make better use of technology to do more with less. Smart cities spending is expected to propel growth of Asia-Pacific’s Internet of Things (IoT) market to reach nearly $437bn in revenue by 2026. This is up from just under $97bn in 2020, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28.52 per cent and is being driven by growing investments in 4G/LTE and 5G, reduced IoT sensor costs, and government support.

The ASEAN cities are on the brink of doing just that, as urbanisation is happening at a breakneck pace. This is a critical turning point for the region. By embracing smart solutions, Southeast Asia has a window of opportunity to set its smaller cities on a more sustainable development path and to address the growing pains of its largest cities before they become intractable problems.

Recognising the potential of smart solutions as set of powerful and cost-effective tools to cities, the ASEAN Smart Cities Network has been launched with 26 locations across the region signing on as pilot cities. The network is to set standards, share best practices, develop action plans, and launch some solutions on a regional scale, in order for the ASEAN cities to be able to take significant steps forward.
